After 200 years, Native Hawaiians make a comeback | Pew Research Center

More than any other state, Hawaii stands out when it comes to its racial and ethnic diversity. The Rainbow State has never had a white majority. In fact, non-Hispanic whites, the largest group in most states, account for only 23% of the population, according to 2013 census figures. Asians, a category that includes Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai and Filipino immigrants whose ancestors once worked on the islands’ sugar cane and pineapple fields, are collectively the largest group at 37%. Hawaii's Racial DiversityBut the real population story is about Native Hawaiians, those who are descended from the original people of Hawaii and who today make up 6% of the islands’ population, or 21% if you include those who are part-Hawaiian. A new demographic analysis, using an innovative technique, estimates that there were 683,000 Native Hawaiians on the island in 1778, when British explorer Capt. James Cook arrived.

Hawaii Maoli Warriors Protect Sacred Mountain from Telescope Construction | Censored News

Today marked the sixth day and sixth night since a group of Kanaka Maoli warriors representing several islands in the Hawaiian Islands and a multi-ethnic group of supporters formed a blockade at 9,000 feet above sea level at Mauna Kea also known as Mauna A Wakea on Hawaiʻi Island. They are protesting the construction of a 30-meter telescope (TMT), which they say is a desecration of the most sacred place in the Hawaiian Islands. The peaceful protest has been ongoing for several years but in the past several months has gathered more momentum and support from Hawaiians and other non-Hawaiians around the world.

Maui's GMO Ban Blocked By Federal Judge | Huffington Post

A federal judge says Maui County may not implement a new law banning the cultivation of genetically modified organisms until he can consider arguments in a lawsuit against the measure. Judge Barry Kurren said Friday that both sides have agreed to delay the date the law goes into effect. Monsanto Co. and a unit of Dow Chemical Co. sued the county earlier this week to stop the law. Local businesses joined the lawsuit. Maui voters passed a ballot initiative last week creating the law. The measure was to take effect after officials certified the election results. That was expected late this month. Kenneth Robbins, an attorney for the plaintiffs, says Kurren is saying the plaintiffs have shown they could potentially suffer irreparable harm if the law goes into effect.

Monsanto Election Spending Is Out Of Control But We’re Still Saying To Vote No On The Maui County GMO Initiative | Maui Time News Feed: Maui's Only Independent News Source

o by now most everyone on the island knows that Monsanto–a giant corporation that says it cares about feeding the world but is far more concerned about profits and market share–has spent more than $6 million to try to defeat the upcoming Maui County ballot measure that would slap a “moratorium” on all genetically modified crops. Together with Dow, their “Citizens Against The Maui County Farming Ban” has spent nearly $8 million against the initiative–more money than former Governor Linda Lingle spent to guarantee her 2006 reelection.

The 10 maps that illustrate the healthiest counties in America | The Washington Post

There are any number of ways to measure quality of life across geographic areas: Who has the longest commutes? Who breathes the cleanest air? Where are obesity rates lowest? Who has the most access to exercise facilities?

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has the answers. The foundation’s annual County Health Rankings, a joint project with the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, use nearly three dozen indicators to pit regions against each other, all in an effort to measure ways to improve health outcomes across the country.

The rankings, released Wednesday, show the counties where residents enjoy higher-than-average health have better access to healthy foods, parks and exercise facilities, where doctors are plentiful and the air is cleaner. Unhealthy atmospheres can lead to lower-than-average graduation rates, higher obesity and denser, more expensive housing conditions (Find the complete report, along with downloadable data, here).

The Solar Technology That Could Solve Californias Water Problem | EcoWatch

The founders of a California company are gearing up to make a difference in their state’s future—about 2 million gallons worth of a difference.

As the state battles a lengthy drought and considers spending $7 billion to $9 billion to produce, transport and store fresh water, WaterFX, a San Francisco-based, independent water producer says it has been testing a potential solution for the past year.

A Simple Solar Oven Makes Salt Water Drinkable | The MindUnleashed

It functions by filling the black boiler with salty sea water in the morning, then tightening the cap. As the temperature and pressure grows, steam is forced downwards through a connection pipe and collects in the lid, which acts as a condenser, turning the steam into fresh water. Once Diamanti established the fundamentals were sound, he experimented with a series of concepts for the aesthetic of the object.

10 Scientific Studies That Prove Consciousness Can Alter Our Physical Material World | Collective Evolution

Nikola Tesla said it best, “the day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence. To understand the true nature of the universe, one must think it terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” Swami Vivekananda was Tesla’s mentor, an Indian Hindu monk and chief disciple of the 19th century saint Ramakrishna.

This "Mad Genius" Organic Farmer's Ideas Are Working. He's Grossing $100K An Acre...

What kind of super-fertilizer allows Paul Kaiser to grow so much food on a mere 8 acres? Lot’s of rotten food scraps and rotten plants – otherwise known as compost. And he uses loads of it. He uses farming practices both old, and cutting-edge-new so well that agricultural specialists from University of California at Davis who have tested his top soil can drive a four-foot steel pole all the way through his fields. This, as opposed to most parts of California, where it would hit infertile hard-pan in less than 12 inches. Last year, Kaiser’s farm located in Sonoma Valley, CA grossed more than $100,000 an acre, too. This is ten times the average for most farmers of this area, even in lucrative wine-country.

This is What Happens To The Body When You Eat Pink Himalayan Salt | Healthy Food House

Check this one. You are sitting down for an awesome family feast. The best china, silk cloth, crystal glasses – it is all there. Yes, there is fresh apple-cinnamon-ginger juice in the glasses. There are baked, steam-cooked and sautéed veggies all over the table. Suddenly, someone grabs the salt and yells out, “Why is your salt pink?” Be nice and explain everyone that it is Himalayan salt, and that it is super-healthy.

Dr Jane Goodall condemns supporters of GM food as being 'anti-science' | Daily Mail Online

Jane Goodall, the renowned primate expert, has condemned ‘deluded’ politicians for pushing ‘Frankenstein Food’. The highly respected academic has endorsed a new book, which argues the companies responsible for developing genetically modified farming and food have twisted the evidence to minimise the dangers. Historically, critics of GM food have been lambasted by the GM companies, scientists who rely on their funding, and politicians, including the UK Government, as being ‘anti-science’. However, Dame Jane argues that the advocates of GM food have ignored evidence of harm with the result it is they who are guilty of being ‘anti-science’.

Michigan Officials Dump Thousands in Organic Food, Crack Eggs One-by-One (with Video) | AltHealthWorks.com

Government-sponsored raids of organic family farms have become more commonplace in recent years, and the latest one has resulted in the waste of thousands of dollars of organic farm-fresh food in one of the most economically depressed states in the union. Michigan’s My Family Co-Op was raided on Monday, July 21, resulting a dumping of nearly $5,000 of milk, eggs, butter and cream.
